Indeed.com reports that the average salary nationwide for a diesel mechanic is $42,000 (November 2011). The average salary for a diesel mechanic technician is $36,000.
In Pennsylvania, annual salaries for diesel mechanics in the Keystone State average $37,000, with technicians averaging $32,000.
Salaries in Ohio average $39,000 for mechanics and $34,000 for a technician.
What's It Like to Work as a Diesel Mechanic?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, diesel service technicians and mechanics, as well as diesel engine specialists, perform a variety of work on diesel systems. Some of this includes:
- Repairing and maintaining the diesel engines that power transportation equipment
- Working on heavy vehicles and mobile equipment, including bulldozers, cranes, road graders, farm tractors, and combines
- Repairing diesel-powered passenger automobiles, light trucks, or boats.
The types of tools a diesel mechanic uses on the job (and in training) include:
- Power tools (including pneumatic wrenches);
- Lathes and grinding machines to rebuild brakes;
- Welding equipment to dismantle and repair exhaust systems;
- Jacks and hoists;
- Basic and tools; and
- All kinds of computerized testing equipment (used for analyzing malfunctions in electrical systems)
Job Outlook for Diesel Mechanics
While the average diesel mechanic salary provides good wages, the BLC reports that job growth in this field will be "slower than average" (although the field will grow in the coming years).
In addition, according to the BLS, "opportunities should be very good for people who complete formal training in diesel mechanics."
